MR no longer an SLFP member: Amaraweera

While stressing that Opposition Leader Mahinda Rajapaksa was no longer a member of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) as he had obtained Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) membership and become its leader, MP Mahinda Amaraweera said they would not take any disciplinary action against Rajapaksa because it would hamper the talks between SLFP and SLPP.

He told a news briefing today that Mahinda Rajapaksa quitting SLFP was a matter of concern.

“According to the SLFP Constitution, if an SLFP member obtained membership of another party, his or her party membership would be annulled,” he said.

“We don’t want to sabotage the talks with SLPP because we have almost come to the final rounds. I think we could conclude the talks before the nominations of the presidential election are handed over,” Amaraweera added.

He said it was baffling as to why Rajapaksa obtained SLFP membership while he was bearing membership of SLPP and becoming one of its senior advisors. (Sheain Fernandopulle)
