MP Raheem's party membership revoked over gold smuggling incident

COLOMBO (Daily Mirror) - The party membership of Puttalam district MP Ali Sabry Raheem, who has been involved in the smuggling of gold and mobile phones into the country, has been revoked by the All Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC).

MP Raheem was detained at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake along with a total of 3.5kg of undeclared gold and 91 mobile phones on 23 May 2023

The decision has been taken following an investigations launched by the party’s disciplinary committee, a spokesman for the party said.

Issuing a statement the party’s Chairman S.Ameer Ali stated that MP Raheem has brought disrepute to the party.

MP Raheem was detained at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake along with a total of 3.5kg of undeclared gold and 91 mobile phones on 23 May 2023.

Later the MP was later released after paying a fine of Rs. 7.5 million.
