The Cabinet is reported to have deferred till April 23 a memorandum submitted by Power, Energy and Business Development Minister Ravi Karunanayake seeking approval for a long-term power plan.

The ministers had said that they did not receive their copies well in advance and therefore unable to study it. Finance Minister Mangala Samaraweera is reported to have said that he received the copy of the paper the previous day and therefore he did not have sufficient time to read it.

Meanwhile, President Maithripala Sirisena who chaired the meeting assigned a committee to look into the proposed power plan.

Earlier, the subject minister had decided to purchase 500 megawatts of electricity from the private sector to end the power crisis and had informed the Cabinet yesterday that there would be no more power cuts after April 10.  (Kelum Bandara)
