Lanka Sugar Company Chairman Janaka Nimalachandra has been removed from the position due to allegations of corruption and other charges, a Plantation Ministry official said.

Major General (Rtd) Sarada Samarakoon has been appointed as the new Chairman.

The official said the former Chairman Nimalachandra had been involved in alleged corruption charges such as going on overseas tours without approval.

Nimalachandra is also facing investigations by the Presidential Secretariat over certain allegations.

Nimalachandra had served three years as Chairman of the Lanka Sugar Company. However, on December 5, sugar mill workers had launched a protest against the decision to appoint an acting Chairman to replace Nimalachandra. The maintenance work of the factory has come to a standstill due to the strike.
