Kinniya clash: Body of person who jumped into river found

Body of one individual who had jumped into the Mahaweli river to escape from the Navy personnel who had come to raid an illegal sand mining place at Kandakadu in Kinniya this morning, Police said.

They said seven racketeers were arrested during the raid while two others had escaped by jumping into the river.

A tense situation prevailed when the naval officers confronted illegal sand miners at Kandakadu.

The Navy had to fire into the air to quell the situation. 

The deceased had been identified as Mohammed Rashik Mohammed aged 22 who is a resident of Kinniya.

The Police and the Navy are continuing their search operations to locate another person who had gone missing in the river.
