A study led by the Central Environmental Authority (CEA) has found that the water quality of the Kelani River has improved considerably.

River water samples were collected on Wednesday (April 1) in order to test and evaluate water quality. The decrease of industrial effluent or waste released into the river over the past few weeks were noted as the cause for this improvement by the authority's Laboratory Services Unit.

Sample tests carried out by the CEA revealed that the turbidity levels in the water were of a positive degree. Turbidity is a measure of the degree to which water loses its transparency due to the presence of suspended particulates. It indicates the cloudiness or haziness caused by a large number of particles which are invisible to the naked eye.

The CEA said that the measures have indicated Kelani river's water quality to be considerably better than reported in recent times. The samples for the tests were obtained from several locations including the Kaduwela bridge and the Kalu Ela bridge.(Kalani Kumarasinghe)
