Referring to the reports of a COVID-19 death due to Black Fungus at the Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, Hospital Director Dr. Shelton Perera said the death was not due to Black Fungus infection.

He told the Daily Mirror today that the COVID death was reported on September 26 and added a sample of lung tissue was sent to the Medical Research Institute after an abnormality was observed in the lungs.

“The report was released yesterday (21) where it was underlined that there were black fungi in victim's lungs,” he stated.

“However, the Judicial Medical Officer at the Hospital has determined in the postmortem report that the death was caused by COVID pneumonia and not by Black Fungus,” the Director added.

The victim (56) is a resident of Elpitiya. (Sheain Fernandopulle)
