An accomplice of underworld figure 'Kalu Thushara' had been arrested with 53 grams of heroin at Wellampitiya yesterday.
The Gothatuwa Police arrested the 29-year-old suspect, identified as Asanka alias Chathuranga, against whom warrants have been issued over a murder and various other offences.
Investigations revealed that Kalu Thushara who is serving a life sentence at the Welikada Prison is operating drug trafficking from inside the prison.
The arrested suspect had been distributing drugs in the Wellampitiya area and depositing money to Kalu Thushara’s account.
Meanwhile, nine suspects were arrested with 300 grams of heroin during raids carried out in Sapugaskanda.
Meanwhile, a total of 417 persons were arrested in special Police raids conducted in the Western Province.
Police said the highest number of suspects were arrested for possessing heroin.
A total of 180 persons were arrested for the possession of heroin while 88 were arrested for the possession of cannabis and 101 arrested for the possession of illicit liquor.
