UNP MP John Amaratunga had said he was ready to resign as the party organiser for Wattala and hand over the reins to a young party member.

“I have been in parliament for 41 years and I feel that the time is ripe for me to retire from politics,” he told journalists yesterday.

“Contesting for an election is no easy task. It involves high spending financially and also, one has to tire one’s self much. I have contested several times and now I feel it is enough and want to call it a day,” he added.

Also, he said that there is a wide possibility of a leadership change in the UNP as many feel that former Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa should be appointed as the new leader.

“Even the current leader Ranil Wickremesinghe had said he does not intend to remain as the UNP leader for long,” he said. (Yohan Perera)
