England Cricket captain Joe Root today surprised a superfan who was watching the match from the nearby Galle Fort, to thank him for supporting the English team.

The superfan Rob Lewis travelled to Sri Lanka in 2020 for the Sri Lanka-England series. Since the series was brought to a halt due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Lewis has remained in Sri Lanka for 10 months in anticipation of the English team’s return.

Following the First Test match win by seven-wickets, the English Skipper called the fan from the stadium, waving to Lewis who was watching him from the Galle Fort. “It was nice to see you finally up on the Fort. Mate, it's an absolute pleasure. That's why I wanted to come over on behalf of all the lads. We really appreciate your support. It's an incredible story and journey that you've been on over the last year or so. So more than anything I wanted to say a massive thank you,” Root said.

Taking to twitter Rob Lewis said he is proud to support his team. “What an unbelievable gesture. Makes me so proud to support you. Congratulations on your double-ton and deserved man of the match award. See you Friday, Skip. We go again,” he tweeted. (Kalani Kumarasinghe)
