The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) said today though there could be some who wish to see the executive presidency abolished, they may oppose the 20th Amendment brought by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) because it contained several weaknesses.
MP Tharaka Balasuriya told a news conference that they were wondering why the JVP was concerned about submitting 20A at this juncture.
"Abolishing the executive presidency is one thing and backing the 20th Amendment brought by the JVP is another thing. The same people who wish to see the executive presidency abolished may not support the 20A because of its weaknesses. What matters is its practicality. A presidential election will be held soon. If the executive presidency is to be abolished, the electoral system should also have be reformed. A discussion should be held to reform the electoral system. My personal opinion is that we should go for a referendum. A majority of people are of the view that the executive presidency should be retained,” he said.
The MP said it appeared that JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayaka was attempting to divert the peoples attention elsewhere with the 20A.
"There is an ongoing UNHRC session and a risk of our military personnel being accused of war crime charges,” he said. (Lahiru Pothmulla)
