The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) today held a discussion with the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) on the 20th Amendment to the Constitution which aimed at abolishing the executive presidency.

The discussion held at the JVP headquarters in Battaramulla was attended by TNA leader R. Sampanthan, his JVP counterpart Anura Kumara Dissanayake, TNA MPs M.A. Sumanthiran, Mavai Senathirajah, Selvam Adaikalanathan, D. Siddarthan, JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva and politburo member K.D. Lal Kantha.

JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake told the media they discussed mustering support for 20A in Parliament and working in tandem on matters of mutual interest. "Six months have lapsed since 20A was included in the order paper. We can present it in Parliament with the agreement of party leaders. We request political parties not to block it but let people take a decision on it at a referendum," he said.

He said the JVP discussed with the TNA about a model to get all communities involved in governance.

Meanwhile, TNA leader R. Sampanthan said they discussed how the two parties could work together for the country and the people. He said they briefed the JVP on matters recently discussed with the President and the Prime Minister on devolution of power. (Ajith Siriwardana)
