Indonesia earthquake, no tsunami threat to Sri Lanka: Met. Dept.

There is no tsunami threat to Sri Lanka as per the tsunami warning after the powerful earthquake near Flores Island in Indonesia, the Metrological Department said.

They said an earthquake of 7.7 magnitudes on the Richter scale struck the Flores Sea area in Indonesia today.

However, according to the foreign media, the US Geological Survey (USGS) said the powerful quake was registered at a depth of 18.5 kilometers (11 miles) in the Flores Sea.

In May this year, an earthquake of magnitude 6.6 struck off the northwest coast of Indonesia's Sumatra island on Friday, the GFZ German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) the foreign media said. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
