India has planned to construct a shortest route to Trincomalee from Dhanushkodi after they take over the Trincomalee Oil Tank Farm, putting the sovereignty and safety of the country at stake, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) said today.

Former JVP MP Sunil Hadunnetti told a news conference that the sovereignty and safety of the country would be at stake in the future and requested Mahanayake Theras and Civil Society groups to intervene in this matter.

He said India was planning to construct a bridge from Dhanushkodi to Talaimannar from 2002 and added that the then Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe had submitted a report to the Indian Transport Minister regarding the construction of this bridge in September, 2015.

"After constructing this bridge, there is a plan to join Talaimannar,Mannar, Periyakulam A30 Road, Vavuniya, Kebithigollawa,Horowpathana, A9 Road and Trincomalee A12 Road.India has a plan to come to Sri Lanka through a short route from the Palk Strait across the Adam's Bridge and then travel to Trincomalee," he said.

He said it was a serious matter when such agreements which were detrimental to the country were signed when Parliament was not operational and pointed out that the Energy Ministry and Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) were in a desperate attempt to justify this transaction.(Ajith Siriwardana)
