It will take at least 14 to 21 days for the immune system to respond to the COVID-19 vaccine, Prof. Neelika Malavige of the Department of Immunology and Molecular Medicine at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura said.

Speaking to the Daily Mirror, she said it is applicable to any vaccine and added that is how the vaccine responds to one's immune system.

She said this in response to the claims made by various parties with regards to shortcomings in vaccination.

“Nobody's immune system responds to any vaccine immediately. It will take at least 21 days to respond. So COVID-19 vaccine is no exception to this process,” she underlined.

Prof. Malavige also reiterated that the research carried out on blood samples of about 2,000 health workers who have already been administered with the vaccine against COVID-19 shown positive results so far. (Sheain Fernandopulle)
