If Covid situation not brought under control, death toll will rise: GMOA

The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) said the death toll would increase during the next two or three months if the current COVID-19 pandemic situation is not controlled.

GMOA General Secretary Dr. Haritha Aluthge told the media the current situation would get worse if the Health authorities continue with the current virus-controlling procedures.
The majority of the 300 cases reported on Sunday (26) was from the community. Considering the definition of community spread, Sri Lanka has reached to its maximum level.
If the country reaches a community spread, a congestion at Intensive Care Units (ICU) in hospitals would be inevitable and it would result in an unusual increase in deaths, Dr. Aluthge said.
He said continuing with the current measures and not taking correct decisions, would push the country into a dangerous situation.
However, Colombo, Gampaha, Kalutara, Kegalle, and Kurunegala identified as high-risk districts for COVID-19 while the dangers persist in several other districts as well, he said.
The GMOA had already proposed to implement certain restrictions on district boundaries to prevent the spread of the virus, Dr. Aluthge added.(Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
