I will quit politics: Sarath Amunugama

Former Vice-President of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) MP Sarath Amunugama today said that he would not contest the upcoming general elections.

Speaking to the media in Kandy, the former minister said that senior ministers should quit politics after a certain period to give opportunities to youngsters.

Amunugama said he had signed an agreement with the party, and though not divulging the specifics of the deal added that he would stand down from politics in keeping with that agreement.

“I have signed an agreement in the SLFP and therefore I should work according to that agreement. There are no issues and differences between the SLFP and SLPP. We used to be in the same cabinet, the same party and used to organise rallies. But I would like to convey a message to the SLFPers not to stay apart over ministerial posts but to think about the SLFPers and work in a collective manner. Now I am old and I should quit politics. That is what’s the best,” he said. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
