I did not refer to prostitution, night life goes beyond prostitution: Diana

- Bars and liquor shops should be kept open from 10 am to 10pm

- Cultivation of Ganja should be promoted for ayurvedic medicine

Taking on critics on her recent remarks on introducing night life activities, State Minister Diana Gamage told Parliament yesterday that when she spoke about night life she was not referring to prostitution.

“When I talked about night life I did not refer to prostitution. Night life goes beyond prostitution,” she said.

She also said when efforts are made to develop the nation those who talk about culture and religion make Sri Lanka stagnate without any development.

“Some people begin talking about culture and religion when an effort is made to develop the nation. Even monks have criticized me. Those who criticize me by talking about religion are hardly aware of Buddhism” the MP said.

“I propose that bars and liquor shops should be kept open from 10 am to 10pm. I have made this proposal earlier and want to make the proposal once again. Unauthorized sales take place from the back door when liquor stores are closed early. Government will not be able to collect taxes from this kind of sales. I also propose that all supermarkets should be granted beer licenses. A foreign tourist should be able to purchase some liquor during the night time,” she also said.

“I have also proposed that the plantation of Ganja should be allowed, I don’t intend to approve of people taking ganja on the roadside when I say this. What I mean is that Ganja should be promoted as a ayurvedic medicine. (Yohan Perera and Ajith Siriwardana)
