A Cabinet memorandum has been submitted to acquire 700 acres of land allocated by the previous government for the Homagama Tech City project to put up a higher education facility, a minister said yesterday.
Higher Education Minister Bandula Gunawardane said he sought Cabinet approval to reallocate this landmass to establish world class technology universities. He said the area people were opposed to the manufacturing zone planned by the former government.
He said he sought Cabinet approval to assign this landmass in Millewa, Padukka of the Homagama electorate to be used for such an education project as a result.
The Minister said leading universities from countries such as China, India and South Korea had expressed interest in investing in this project.
These universities, once set up, will be open for students from the countries such as the Maldives, Bangladesh, Nepal and Pakistan.
“I have submitted the Cabinet paper. It will be taken up for discussion later,” he said.
The Homagama tech city project was launched by the Megapolis and Western Development Ministry of the last government. (Kelum Bandara)
