The showery condition over the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and North-western provinces is expected to continue further today accompanied by gusty winds, the Department of Meteorology forecast today.

“Fairly heavy falls about 100mm are likely at some places in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and North-western provinces and in Galle, Matara and Mannar districts. Several spells of showers may occur in the North-Central province as well,” it said.

It added showers or thundershowers would occur at several places in Uva province and in Ampara and Batticaloa districts after 2.00 pm.

Due to the torrential rains that showered for the last 24 hours, several incidents of trees falling were reported from certain areas while water level of Attanagalu Oya is rising.

At least 11,389 people from 2,751 families in 12 districts have been so far affected due to the adverse weather conditions.

Meanwhile, it said the wind speed could increase up to (60-70) kmph in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Kankasanturai via Mannar.

“Wind speed can increase up to (60-65) kmph in the sea areas extending from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambanthota,” the department said.

“These sea areas can be rough to very rough at times. The other sea areas can be rough at times as the wind speed can increase up to (50-60) kmph,” it added.

In addition, there is a possibility that near shore sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle, may experience the effect of swell waves, having 2.5 – 3.5m height.

The department requested fishing and naval communities to be vigilant in this regard. (Sheain Fernandopulle)
