After the incident of a Covid-19 infected individual spitting in the face of a Public Health Inspector (PHI) in Atalugama in Bandaragama, the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) said health professionals would have to take very serious decisions in future regarding providing their services for the people in the area.
Addressing the media GMOA Editor Dr. Haritha Aluthge said the people in the Atalugama village did not provide their support even on earlier occasions to conduct PCR tests.
"Providing services for the people in the area in a situation like this is not safe for the health officers," he said.
"Therefore, we cannot let our health officials fall in danger."
“This ill-treated behaviour will leave all the other villagers in danger. No one in the village spoke against this person as support for the PHI officers. Even those persons did not listen to their community leaders,” Dr Aluthge said.
"If the Health services refused to provide their help, the people in Atalugama will die one by one at home. We do not want Atalugama to be a ‘Visala Mahanuara’."
Meanwhile, Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said when the area PHI had visited the individual in order to transfer him to a treatment centre, he had refused to cooperate.
He also said that police will take stern action against such individuals. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
