In order to maintain the university education system in the country, harassment of newcomers should be completely eradicated, Education Minister Prof. G.L. Pieris said.

He said necessary steps should be taken to end this situation in universities.

"Removing this inhumane practice is not that easy, because some lecturers are allegedly in a state of approving the existence of a new form of harassment. Due to these harassment and torture, some students had to lay their lives and some are suffering from various illnesses for many years," the minister said.

The minister further said that this situation could only be changed by building a strong referendum within the universities.

"We have identified the main problem in education in our country, which is the mismatch between the education of children and the job market, " he said.

As the minister, I request the university students, some of the university staff as well as lecturers to annul this mentality, he added. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
