The Public Health Inspectors Union today requested political parties and professionals to suspend all rallies to be held on May Day, considering the COVID-19 situation in the country.

PHI Union President Upul Rohana predicted a definite rise of COVID-19 cases over the coming weeks, due to poor behavior of people during the festive season.

“At this point of time, we can’t afford to take any risks, as we have been shown signs of a huge surge in COVID-19 cases in the country. Therefore, we would like to request all political parties not to hold any rallies on May Day as it would worsen the situation," he said.

Meanwhile, he said Sri Lanka was in a critical situation in terms of the spread of Coronavirus. “At present, the rise in cases we observe are not due to the public behaviour during the festive period."

“The consequence of the bad behavior of people during festive season would be experienced in another two or three weeks, which would be more dangerous. Therefore, the third wave in the country would be inevitable, if the cases being reported at present were not properly managed,” he stressed. (Sheain Fernandopulle)
