The Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) said yesterday the government was attempting to introduce a pricing formula for electricity and water, similar to that used for fuel.

Addressing a news briefing held at the SLPP Head Office, MP Dr. Ramesh Pathirana said the fuel pricing formula was introduced as a proposal of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

"We learnt that the government was attempting to increase fuel prices today based on the pricing formula. This will burden the people more. Similarly, the government is attempting to introduce a pricing formula to increase electricity prices. This equation will be introduced for water as well," he said.

He said a fuel price hike would have adverse impacts on the transport industry.

"When fuel prices dropped during the 50-day government, service providers voluntarily reduced prices of many services and products. If prices go up again, people will go out of the frying pan into the fire," he said. (Lahiru Pothmulla)
