Govt. to halt using diesel for power generation by 2030

The Government is planning to stop the usage of diesel for power generation completely by the year 2030, Power Minister Dullas Alahapperuma said.

He made this comment while participating at an official discussion with the Turkish Ambassador at the Ministry recently.

"The contribution of green and renewable energy to the national power generation will be increased to 70%, the share of diesel to generate power will be reduced to 5% by the year 2025," the Minister said.

While developing the existing renewable sources, the Ministry is planning to explore new sources to end using diesel to generate power, he said.

During the discussion, the Turkish Ambassador agreed to provide technical assistance required for the development of renewable energy to enhance the power sector in the country. 

He also said that he intends to attract the attention of both public and private sector investors to establish new renewable energy projects in the country.

He said that the Turkish Ambassador intends to involve private investors also in the future to discuss matters in this regard. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
