Asserting that the government’s blame game on the Easter Sunday bombings was unacceptable, the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) said yesterday the government should act as one to ensure the security of people.

Addressing a press conference, SLPP Chairman Prof. G.L. Peiris said the government was responsible for the breakdown of national security.

Referring to an article published in the international media, he said the government had failed to act on terror warnings. Therefore, the government could not absolve it, he said.

“The government has appointed five defence secretaries during its term. It should be a little more careful in making appointments to top posts,” he said.

Responding to Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on the need to enact the Counter-Terrorism Bill, Prof. Peiris said it was a piece of legislation seeking to deal with terrorists with extreme kindness.

He said the previous government eliminated the LTTE – which was considered to be the most ruthless terrorist outfit in the world – under the provisions of the Prevention of Terrorism Act. (Kelum Bandara)
