Govt. promised prosperity but struggles to provide essentials at least: JVP

The Government, which came to power with a promise to create prosperity in the country through the slogan “Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour”, has not even been able to supply at least the essential commodities such as gas and milk powder to its people, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) said today.

JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva told a news conference that the Government had no plan or mechanism to control the escalating prices and failure to address the supply of essential commodities, and as a result of this, the people have been greatly inconvenienced.

He said it was evident that an era of queues would be created in the country once again.

“Hopes of the policy framework of the Government “Vistas of Prosperity and Splendour” has been shattered now. The President, Prime Minister or the Government do not have a vision to take the country forward. The whole administrative mechanism has collapsed. It is irregular and heading without any plan. No one is taking responsibility for anything,” he said.

He also said the Government is not ruling the country according to the Constitution and laws, but to satisfy a handful of their cronies.

He said the Government has failed to intervene even in minor issues such as controlling the price of rice and rice scarcity in the market.

“The Government appointed a Commissioner General of Essential Services to control prices and ensured continuous supply of essential foodstuff. Rice mills and paddy stores were raided soon after he was appointed. However, there was no change in the prices of rice or did nothing to address the shortage of rice in the market,”he said.

Mr. Silva said rice prices would be increased even more in the future as paddy harvest will be decreased due to the fertilizer issue.(Ajith Siriwardana)
