Sri Lanka will have smart schools which will train students to prepare for the national digital strategy which would be a revolution, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said today.

The Premier said this at the opening of a three-storey building at Galahitiyawa Hemamali Maha Vidyalaya in Ganemulla, last morning.

The Prime Minister said the first smart school will be set up at Kurunegala MV, while there will be such schools in Kandy and four in Colombo.

“Sri Lanka will undertake a programme to digitalise all government institutions like Latvia and Finland. These countries go along with digital economy with e-currency while most of other things are done online. Technology is developing. There will be driver-less vehicles in Sri Lanka soon. We are to march towards a new era,” he said.

He said students should be prepared for the future and stressed the e-school programme will fulfil this need.

“These schools will prepare the students in the future. Sri Lanka is planning to connect Inland Revenue Department, Immigration and Emigration Department and other institutions. Students in these schools will be trained to take up future challenges."

The Prime Minister said other schools will also gradually start IT with modern technology.

He said the cabinet had approved the distribution of tabs. Mr. Wickremesinghe said a cabinet subcommittee headed by Minister Kabir Hashim has been set up to look into the matter. “We will be able to distribute tabs in several months. This is the beginning of a revolution in education,” he said. (Yohan Perera)
