Gazette on prohibiting sale, use of five pesticides including Glyphosate revoked

An Extraordinary Gazette has been issued by the Registrar of Pesticides revoking the Gazette issued in 2014, which prohibited the use and sale of five pesticides including Glyphosate.

The other pesticides include Propanil, Carbaryl, Cholopyrifos and Carbofuran.

According to the Extraordinary Gazette issued on December 22, 2014, the use, the offer for sale or sale of the said pesticides, were prohibited within the Districts of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Kurunegala, Moneragala and within the Divisonal Secretariat, Divisions of Mahiyanganaya, Rideemaliyadda, Kandaketiya in the Badulla District.

Accordingly, the new gazette has revoked the order given in the Gazette issued in 2014 and thereby, the ban on the use, the offer for sale or sale of the said pesticides has been lifted in the respective areas.

The new gazette underlines that by virtue of the powers vested by Section 11 of the Control of Pesticides Act, No. 33 of 1980, Jayakody Arachchige Sumith, the Registrar of Pesticides, revoked the Order made under Section 11 of the aforesaid Act and published in Gazette Extraordinary No. 1894/4 of December 22, 2014.

The order has been revoked on the advice of the Pesticide Technical and Advisory Committee. (Sheain Fernandopulle)
