The Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) yesterday lodged a complaint with the Inspector General of Police (IGP) requesting him to initiate an investigation into the statement made by Sri Lanka Standard Institute’s Director-General Siddhika Senaratne, who claimed that she was aware of the fact that certain food items sold in the market contain substance unfit for human consumption.
GMOA Secretary Dr. Shenal Fernado told a news conference that SLSI DG’S statement implies that the SLSI had failed to take necessary action against the food items containing harmful substances being sold in the market even though the SLSI was aware of it.
He said it was a criminal offence under the penal code not to take action to prevent any poisonous substance being consumed.
Dr. Fernando said the SLSI was tasked to ensure the safety of the food consumed by the people adding that SLSI had neglected or purposely delayed taking action against the unhealthy food items sold in the market.
He said they requested the IGP to inquire into the DG’S statement and to take action against food items containing harmful substances sold in the market. (AJITH SIRIWARDANA)
