Fuel surcharge lifted from Wednesday: Minister

Power and Energy Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said the fuel surcharge of Rs.26 per liter enforced on petrol and diesel has been lifted since last Wednesday.

At a media conference yesterday, the minister said the lowered fuel prices would remain consistent throughout this year regardless of an increase in fuel prices in the global market in near future.

Furthermore, he said due to the lifting of fuel surcharges, the Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) would suffer a loss of more than Rs.35 per petrol liter and more than Rs. 25 per diesel liter.

“If we had lowered fuel prices as soon as the prices went down in the global market three months back, the lowered prices would not have lasted long. Instead, we enforced fuel surcharges back then in order to lower the fuel prices in Sri Lanka as the global prices rise gradually,” Minister Amaraweera said. (Thisari Walawege)
