Former DIG Vaas, wife, son indicted for beating up SLIIT student

Former DIG Vaas Gunawardena, his son Ravindu and wife Shyamali and five former CCD Police officers were today indicted by the Attorney General in the Colombo High Court for assaulting a student of Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT).

The accused K. Indika Pushpa Kumara, P. D Priyankara de Silva, Y. M. Lakshman Thilakarathne, D. M. S Sandun Dissanayake, Ravindu Vaas Gunawardena, Shamali P. Perera, Vaas Gunawardena and S. Saman Vithana were indicted for assaulting the SLIIT student Nipuna Dhanushka Ramanayake on August 6, 2009 at Pittugala, Malabe.

The accused, who were Police personnel of the Colombo Crime Division at the time, had together with the son, wife and then Director of CCD Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Vaas Gunawardena had been accused of assaulting Nipuna Ramanayake. (T. Farook Thajudeen)
