Foreign Medics without SLMC registration practising at SL Army: Nalinda

JVP MP Nalinda Jayatissa today revealed that some doctors who had graduated from foreign universities were practising at the Sri Lankan Army without being registered under the Sri Lanka Medical Council (SLMC).

He told parliament that it was illegal for any doctor to practice without the SLMC registration.

"The doctors can obtain the membership of the SLMC only after undergoing an internship. Doctors graduating from foreign universities should pass the Act16 exam to get eligibility to undergo an internship. Some graduates from foreign universities are practising as doctors for the army without SLMC registration," he said.

He said the reason given by the army for the situation was that graduates from Sri Lankan universities were not applying for vacancies in the army as doctors and added that the government should formulate a mechanism to overcome the situation instead of recruiting unregistered doctors from foreign universities.
