Fmr. Army Int. officer remanded over assault of Upali Tennakoon

Former Army Intelligence Officer Lalith Rajapaksa who was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) over the assault of former Chief Editor of Rivira and Divayina newspaper Upali Tennakoon, was remanded till July 21 Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekera said.

The suspect was remanded after he was produced before the Gampaha Magistrate's Court today, SP Gunasekera said.

He said Corporal Rajapaksa was arrested at his residence in Hanwella last night.

Corporal Rajapaksa had been allegedly attached to the controversial Tripoli Platoon in Maradana, which is alleged to have been involved in certain assault cases.

It was reported that the arrest was made after the CID matched the fingerprints found in a van used on the day of the assault to that of Rajapaksa.

Tennakoon was assaulted on January 23, 2009 by unknown assailants.

Both Tennakoon and his wife were injured during the attack.
