Based on information received from the Police Narcotic Bureau (PNB), the Sri Lanka Navy had raided a fishing trawler which was carrying 275 kg of heroin off North Eastern coast, the Navy said.

Navy Spokesman Isuru Suriyabandara said, the Sri Lanka Naval craft ‘Sagara’ carried out a comprehensive surveillance operation off the North Eastern coast and apprehended a Multiday Fishing Trawler with five Sri Lankans today.

The vessel is being taken ashore for further investigation.

The spokesman said the suspects, capitalising the present crisis situation in the country, would have attempted to smuggle the contraband. (Darshan Sanjeewa)
