If another wave of protests continue along with the re-opening of the country, it would be unable to prevent the emerging a fifth COVID wave, the Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) said.
GMOA General Secretary Dr. Nalinda Herath said today that after re-opening the country next week, the utmost responsibility should be taken by the public, the government and all other relevant parties.
"People should keep in mind that the COVID virus is still in society and a considerable number of positive cases are reported each day. The country is re-opening while facing a critical situation," he said.
People should be more responsible than in previous times. They should always be mindful to follow basic health guidelines such as maintaining social distance, wearing face masks and always washing their hands, Dr. Herath said.
Therefore, it is imperative to control the creation of a 5th COVID wave targeting the reopening of schools, he said.
If the fifth COVID wave is unleashed by any chance, there would be a problem re-opening the schools. It was reported that certain people are planning to launch a protest next week, Dr. Herath added. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
