23 September 2019 09:32 am

The Emigration and Immigration Department today suspended the normal service of issuing passports due to the strike by the Government Service Executive Officers. Striking workers demonstrated in front of the office crippling the routine duties of the department.

Speaking to Daily Mirror, Department's Assistant Controller B. G. G. Milinda said there was no executive officers to work since they joined the trade union action.

Therefore, the Department has decided to suspend issuing passport under normal service for today.

However, he said people were able to handover their applications from 9.30 a.m to 1.00 p.m today.

“If the trade union action continues until today, suspension of service will continue,” Mr Milinda added.

Government service executive officers had launched an indefinite strike from September 18 owing to salary anomalies. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
