The Lanka Private Bus Owners' Association (LPBOA) said today it had a discussion with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to obtain at least 50 low-floor electric buses to add to the existing fleet.

LPBOA chairman Gemunu Wijerathne said the association requested the UNDP to grant a 50 percent subsidy and promised to invest the balance payment for the buses.

The LPBOA proposed the initial launch of the bus service in Colombo, its suburbs and Jaffan town, considering the geographical situation of these areas.

These low-floor electric buses cannot be driven in the hill country and frequently flooding areas.

These buses will be equipped with the digital ticketing system.

The discussion was fruitful and the UNDP assured it would fully support the implementation of the service as soon as possible, Wijerathne said. (Chaturanga Pradeep Samarawickrama)
