Disciplinary action will be taken against state workers: Maithree Gunaratne

I will take immediate disciplinary action over governments servants who use social media during work hours, Uva Province Governor Maithree Gunaratne said.

He said he had received many complaints that government servants are in the habit of neglecting the people until they finish surfing Facebook, Viber, WhatsApp, and other social media applications using their mobile phones.

"After I assumed duties as Governor of the Uva Province, I received many such complaints, even regarding certain school teachers who were using Facebook without performing their duties. I have requested all these government servants and their higher officials to stop the use of social media while on duty," he said.

“If I receive any further complaints about any government official, in this regard, I would first interdict him/her and only after this will I conduct a disciplinary inquiry,” the Governor said.

"People have been requested to send photos of the government servants using social media while on duty. They have been appointed to serve the public and that service should be given to the maximum. I successfully implemented the same decision when I was the Governor of Kandy.

With all their extra work, government servants do not work even two hours for a day,” the Governor said. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
