Death sentence to be commuted to life imprisonment - State Minister

State Minister of Prison Reforms Lohan Ratwatte said that the inmates who are currently serving death sentence at prisons, would see their death sentence commuted to life imprisonment.

He said about 8,000 inmates who are unable to meet bail formalities would also be released before end of December.

He made these remarks while addressing the media following his visit to the Welikada Prison.

Meanwhile, a protest staged by a group of inmates at the Welikada Prison was called off after a discussion with the Minister.
