With the island-wide curfew in effect reports of domestic violence have emerged from Colombo, according to the Accident and Orthopaedic Service of the National Hospital.

While the average number of accidents reported to the hospital has reduced, a worrying number of patients have sought treatment for injuries sustained in violent domestic incidents, according to Hospital Coordinator Pushpa Ramyani de Zoysa.

“There has been a decrease in the number of accidents. Our team usually attends to at least 250 accidents daily. However, yesterday, the total number of accidents reported was at 66”  Ms. Zoysa said speaking to the Daily Mirror. Only 20 patients out of them had to be admitted to the hospital for treatment, she added.

“Although the number of accidents has decreased due to the curfew, we came across a concerning number of females who sought treatment due to cases of domestic abuse, “Ms. Zoysa said. (Kalani Kumarasinghe)
