Commissioner’s transfer: Some CMC members want transfer order cancelled

Some Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) members are urging Western Province Governor Asath Sally to rescind his letter transferring the Municipal Commissioner V. K. Anura.

He is reported to have been issued the transfer letter over corruption charges.

CMC member Mahinda Kahandagama said a person cannot be named guilty unless it is proven to be so.

"The presidential commission appointed to look into the Meetotumulla tragedy had found the entire CMC guilty. Therefore action should not be taken against the commissioner alone,” Mr. Kahandagama said and added that he too had complained against the commissioner.

CMC UPFA Member Pradeep Jayewardane said corruption was a part of the system and that nothing is done without money.

“You have to pay money to get anything done,” he said and added that the Commissioner was found guilty on the Meetotumulla disaster.

CMC member Shermila Gonawala said politicians should remember that they represent the people and not the officials and added that she was opposed to the move by a group of members to request for the cancellation of the transfer order.

She said action should be taken against a person if he is found guilty.

Ms. Gonawala said the Commissioner has to be transferred if found guilty and should be allowed to stay on if not so. (Yohan Perera)
