After establishing a special unit, the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children, it is learnt that a man from Kandy had uploaded nearly 100 child pornographic videos and pictures by himself into the cyberspace or social media.

Police Spokesman SDIG Ajith Rohana said the new unit was established at the Children and Women Bureau in Colombo last month in order to monitor the pornographic video clips and photos about  children.

He said more than 17,000 video clips and photographs related to child pornography have been uploaded to the cyberspace from Sri Lanka through various devices since June 17 to July 28 this year.

He said although there were 17,000 cases, the number of persons who uploaded those pornographic clips into internet or social media could be less.

The spokesman said that they have the IP addresses and telephone numbers of the suspect in order to take necessary action after the investigations.

He said the police are engaged in patrolling the cyberspace all the time to monitor pornography related incidents.

"The new unit has the technology that can identify the persons, their IP addresses and telephone numbers within moments after once they upload any porn material of children to internet or social media platforms such as Facebook, Whatsapp, Viber, Youtube or Imo through any devices," SDIG Rohana said.(Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)
