Chairman of Kinniya UC arrested over ferry tragedy

The Chairman of the Kinniya Urban Council has been arrested in connection with the incident in which six people, including four school children, were killed  when a ferry capsized in the Kuringankerni Lagoon.

Police said the chairman was arrested on several charges, including allowing the ferry to operate across the lagoon.

He was taken into custody by the Kinniya Police this morning after obtaining a statement regarding the incident.

The arrested chairman will be produced in the Trincomalee Magistrate's Court.

Earlier, the police arrested the owner and two operators of the passenger ferry over the incident.

Six persons including four children had drowned and 20 others were hospitalised following the incident.(Darshana Sanjeewa Balasuriya)
