Chain-snatching incidents on the rise: Police

It has been reported that increasing incidents of chain-snatching targeting women and four such theft cases in this regard was reported, police spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said.

He said the incidents were reported from Yakkala, Wellawa, Walasmulla and Kalmunai police areas during the past 24-hours. 

All the victims affected were women, he said.

"All the perpetrators were the riders and pillion riders of motorcycles and women are becoming  victims of crimes of this nature. Therefore, all are advised to take precautionary measures in order to prevent such incidents," the police spokesman said.

He said the women who walk on isolated roads or in the poorly lit areas are becoming the victims of these snatch thieves.

The police have arrested 13 suspects who had involved in snatch theft incidents during the past three weeks.

The police investigations revealed that the suspects who were involved in these cases were members of various organised crime groups or drug addicts, the spokesman added. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
