Five persons including the driver who were arrested for driving the car in a reckless manner on the Southern Expressway (E-01) on April 10, have been granted bail by the Panadura Magistrate court today.

Police Spokesman DIG Ajith Rohana said that the suspects were granted bail on Rs. 500,000 personnel bail.

Police launched an investigation after a widespread video circulated on social media showing a group of men commuting in a car in a highly reckless manner on the Expressway.

The video clearly showed that four persons on board the sedan, had lowered the shutters and were seated on the doors facing each other from both sides of the vehicle.

Their unruly behaviour had caused disturbance and distraction to the fellow motorists who were driving along on the Expressway.

The passengers and the driver were arrested following the investigation on April 13 and were remanded till today (22).

DIG Rohana said that charges were also framed against the original owner of the car who is a resident of Kandy for not following proper procedure when registering the vehicle.

The court imposed a fine of Rs. 5,000 against the original owner.

The case will be taken for next hearing on November 5, 2021.(DSB)
