A cabinet paper is to be presented to appoint more officials to Sri Lankan missions abroad in view to arrest the manpower shortages prevail in these missions, Minister of Foreign Employment Promotion and Labour Manusha Nanayakkara told Parliament today.

The Minister came out with this information when Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) MP J. C. Alawathugoda raised the issue in the House.

“There is no one even to answer the phones in many Sri Lankans missions abroad as many of them have been ordered to return with the decision to downsize the workforce in the Sri Lankan foreign missions. Therefore we request the government to reverse its decision and to appoint staff in Sri Lankan missions overseas,” the MP said.

Some of those who were engaged in trafficking Sri Lankan women from Dubai to Oman have been arrested and operations are underway to apprehend others who are involved in it, Minister Nanayakkara told Parliament today. (Yohan Perera and Ajith Siriwardana)
