COVID virus mutations can create new strains even in our country: GMOA

Although we have succeeded in preventing the entry of new COVID virus strains into the country, we cannot prevent the mutations of the virus that already exists in our country, Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) Editor Dr. Haritha Aluthge said.

Addressing the media he said mutations of the virus is a usual story.

Every virus strain in any country can have mutations, he said.

"For the mutation of a virus, there are no limits. It can change to a new strain anywhere," Dr. Aluthge said.

Therefore, there is a possibility of emerging new COVID-19 virus strains even in our country similar to which has emerged in other countries.

It was revealed that more than 20 COVID virus strains are prevalent in the world, he said.

The basic health habits should be maintained, regardless of any type of virus strain, Dr. Aluthge said. (Chaturanga Samarawickrama)
