Twenty three Sri Lankans who were working in Middle Eastern countries have succumbed to COVID-19 during past three months, Foreign Employment Bureau (SLFEB) told the Daily Mirror today.

Country Total COVID-19 deaths since March
UAE 8
Kuwait 7
Saudi Arabia 6
Oman 2

The highest number of deaths has been reported from United Arab Emirates (UAE) including 7 deaths from Dubai and 1 from Abu Dhabi. The remaining deaths have been reported from Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and Oman.

“We still don’t know how many housemaids were among them. The report we have now is not gender specified,” SLFEB Spokesman Mangala Randeniya said.

SLFEB said the final rites of all the 23 Sri Lankan migrant workers who died during past three months have been conducted in their respective host countries due to COVID-19 related health concerns. The family members of the deceased in Sri Lanka had given their consent, understanding the current situation, Randeniya said. (Piyumi Fonseka)
