A top military officer ensured the envoys of Islamic countries that a team of eight army personnel had been stationed at each police station concerned to assist the police in the event of any communal riot, the Daily Mirror learns.

The Organization of Islamic Countries called on Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Admiral Ravindra C. Wijegunaratne on Wednesday to discuss the latest situation.

The discussion centred on the outbreak of violence in some areas of the northwestern province and Minuwangoda, and steps were taken to contain the tension.

Among the organisation members that were represented were Iran, Palestine, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Bangladesh, Egypt and others.

The CDS briefed the steps taken by the government and assured them that the situation had been brought under control by the security forces and the police. He is reported to have said that a team of military personnel has been stationed at each police station concerned to be deployed in the case of an emergency.

He likened the Eastern Sunday bomb attack in Sri Lanka to the 9/11 attack in the United States. (Kelum Bandara)
